Session 067 - IAEA Special Session on the Management of Disused Sealed Sources (Part 1 of 3)
This panel focused on the worldwide problem of long-term management of Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS), which has been a topic of interest at recent forums including the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) and an IAEA meeting on topics related to the Code of Conduct on the Safety and Security of Radioactive Sources, both in 2012. Topics included NSS conclusions and impacts with respect to DSRS; development of national strategies for sustainable end-of-life management of DSRS and assessment of options – repatriation to country of origin, reuse and recycling, long-term storage and disposal; challenges in the safe, secure, and sustainable long-term management of DSRS; selection of technical options, depending on the extent of the national nuclear program and radioactive waste management infrastructure; bilateral and multilateral assistance programs; and the role of source manufacturers and industry, including recyclers.
