This panel focused on the plans, requirements, and status of efforts to establish one or more private consolidated interim dry stores for used nuclear fuel (UNF) in the US. Discussion included facilities required at a consolidated store for receiving UNF, transport of the fuel to the facility, siting and licensing. The US DOE's recent initiative of outreach to solicit public opinion on the development of consent based approaches for siting consolidated stores was discussed, and how the private fuel storage initiatives are contributing insights and relevant experience to this outreach process.
