This panel discussed the critical role that human performance improvement efforts can play in establishing and sustaining an organization’s robust culture of “Reporting” through a “Just” work environment. Building a strong operational, quality and safety culture demands that we aggressively identify and mitigate operational risks to individuals, assets and business reputation. In our high hazard/complex work environments, it is imperative that we get timely information relative to these risks from the people performing and supervising the work. This requires that we establish a high level of trust between workers, supervisors and management. “Trust” can be enhanced by ensuring that fair and honest assessments of human errors (versus violations) are conducted, and that real organizational and individual accountability is achieved. Attendees shared in a spirited discussion with our expert panelists on the importance of trust in establishing effective reporting and just cultures.

Panelists includeJoe Estey, Manager, Safety Engineering and Training, Advanced Technologies and Laboratories (ATL); Michael Hull, Manager, Technology Development, Luminant Power; Christopher Lloyd, AREVA Federal Services, Inc.; and Stephen Varnell, Project Director, Fluor Power Services.
