Session:

05A - The Hanford Site - An Update of Challenges and Accomplishments

This panel discussion will focus on the cleanup of the US DOE Hanford site in Washington. The site covers an area of over 500 square miles and dates from the Manhattan Project. Nine nuclear reactors and four processing plants were used to produce nuclear materials for the defense program. Wastes remain on site including spent fuel, 54 million gallons of mixed radioactive/hazardous waste, transuranics in various configurations, and significant soil and groundwater contamination from past operations. The cleanup is managed by two Department of Energy Field Offices through multiple contractors. Regulatory oversight is provided principally by the US EPA and the State of Washington Department of Ecology. Panelists include US DOE senior managers at the Field Office level, the principal regulators and contractor executives.
