50 - Reducing Technical Risks in US Department of Energy Environmental Management Projects
|
|
This panel will focus on the recent External Technical Reviews (ETRs) which have resulted in significant changes to major projects in DOE's Environmental Management (EM) projects. Presentations and papers in technical sessions have detailed the approach in using reviews to independently assess activities within EM and four ETRs for the major EM projects underway or about to begin. This panel will discuss the role of the DOE Office of Engineering and Technology in reducing risks, stress the importance for structured assessments to address uncertainties to mitigate project management risks, briefly summarize findings and recommendations of these reviews, and the lessons learned for future ETRs. Panelists include Mark Gilbertson, DOE HQ; Terry Spears DOE -Savannah River; John Longenecker, Demonstration Bulk Vitrification System ETR; Walt Tamosaitis, Waste Treatment Plant ETR; John DeVine, Tank 48 ETR; Harry Harmon, Salt Waste Processing Facility ETR; and a panelist for the Groundwater and Soils ETR.
