Session 09 - The Future of Yucca Mountain and Discussion of Alternatives

The Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) has been lynchpin of US High Level Waste (HLW) management strategy since the site was designated in 2002. US Navy nuclear ship refueling programs, defense production site cleanup efforts (e.g. Savannah River, Hanford, and Idaho National Lab), and commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel waste management strategies are all based on, and assume, continued progress on YMP. But Congress has reduced funding so low that continued progress on YMP is seriously jeopardized. The impact on defense production sites, navy nuclear ship refueling and the viability of existing and new commercial nuclear programs would all be severely impacted by lengthy delays or termination of the YMP licensing effort. This panel of eminent experts will discuss the science and politics of YMP and how you can help.
