| The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has been studying Yucca Mountain, Nevada, for more than 20 years to determine its suitability as a geologic repository for the nation’s commercial and defense spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. An arid climate, limited surface water, and deep water tables characterize the area. If the site is found suitable and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approves a license application, the Department of Energy is to build and operate an underground disposal facility. |
