The recycle/reuse of aluminum cans paper, cardboard, oil, batteries, etc., is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dispositioning DOE’s excess materials inventory. The amount of material projected to be removed or disposed of as a result of downsizing, environmental cleanup and site closures over the next several years is in excess of millions of tons. The National Center of Excellence for Metals Recycle (NMR) is working with sites throughout the DOE Complex to divert this material form out nation’s landfills and disposal cells by promoting and facilitating recycle/reuse alternatives. Since its inception NMR has facilitated, through the development and deployment ion innovative management approaches, the recycle/reuse of over 54,000 metric tons of materials and equipment with an estimated cost avoidance to DOE exceeding $83 million. NMR has been recognized for its achievements by receiving several DOE National Awards and two White House Closing the Circle Awards.
